Tenders would be invited soon for lining 1,664 others.
The ministry revealed that 30 percent of the target has been already accomplished.
Egypt has rehabilitated canals with lengths of up to 5,242 km in different governorates thus far since the national project of lining canals kicked off.
The national project for lining the canals in Sohag Governorate, is one of the most important national projects implemented by the political leadership in the governorate in order to conserve irrigation water and ensure that water reaches the ends of the canals on a regular basis throughout the year.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi made an inspection tour of some of development construction projects that included newly-built highways, car market, besides projects of irrigation canal lining, on Friday, said the Presidency in a statement.
The target for the first phase ending in 2022 and worth LE18 billion is lining 7,000 kilometers of canals.
In April 2020, President Sisi issued a decision to establish canals lining across the country in 2 years instead of 10. The lining project is estimated to save 5 billion cubic meters in seepage losses.
