CAIRO – 18 April 2022: The national project for lining the canals in Sohag Governorate, is one of the most important national projects implemented by the political leadership in the governorate in order to conserve irrigation water and ensure that water reaches the ends of the canals on a regular basis throughout the year.
The national project for lining the canals is a cultural and qualitative leap that comes within the plans and strategies of the Egyptian state to improve the process of water management and distribution. It ensures easy access of irrigation water to agricultural lands, in addition to solving the problems of water delivery at the ends of the canals and increasing agricultural productivity, as well as overcoming health and environmental problems.
The total of the canals targeted to be lined within the governorate, as part of the work of the national project for canal lining, amounted to 212 canals, with a total length of 640 km, and at a cost of EGP 2.64 billion, in cooperation with the Ministry of Irrigation, aiming to rationalize water losses, preserving the environment, and improving irrigation quality.
Sohag is one of the Egyptian governorates that witnessed the largest development and lining of canals in its history, and the national project for the rehabilitation and lining of canals within the presidential initiative "A Dignified Life" is considered a major axis of the development of the Egyptian countryside and the advancement of the standard of living of citizens.

1 - The total number of canals targeted to be lined within the national project of Sohag Governorate is 212 canals.
2 - The total lengths of the targeted canals within the powerful canal lining project is 460 km.
3 - The total cost of the lining works is 2 billion and 64 million pounds.
4 - Work was carried out on 178 canals, with a total length of 527 km, and at a total cost of one billion and 661 million pounds.
5- Lining of 61 canals, with a length of 307 km, has been completed, and work is underway on 117 others, with an implementation rate of 58.2 percent.
6 – A total of 34 canals are being offered for lining, with a total length of 11.193 km and a cost of 403 million pounds.
7 - The projects take into account the technical requirements and standard specifications in implementation.
8 - The national project for the rehabilitation and lining of canals represents a cultural shift to protect the environment and reduce water losses.
9 - The national project ensures that water reaches the end of the water drains without hindrances.
