CAIRO – 1 November 2022: The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development indicated in a report that the government targets to finish the lining of 20,000 kilometers of canals by mid-2024.
The ministry revealed that 30 percent of the target has been already accomplished with a total of 4,532 kilometers at a budget of LE12 billion. Of those, 1,500 kilometers were located in the villages of Decent Life initiative, and the value of their lining was LE6.8 billion.
The report showcased that LE16 billion have been allocated to complete the lining of 5,759 kilometers in FY2022/2023. As such, the progress rate will hit 59 percent by July.
It is noteworthy to mention that the canal lining initiative is carried out at 18 governorates, mainly in Menya, Luxor, Menoufeya, Asyut, Qena, Beni Suef, Sohag, and Beheira.
The minister of irrigation and water resources declared in August that 2,803 kilometers of canals had been lined in Upper Egypt alone at a budget of LE10.1 billion.
The minister added that the lining of 1,776 kilometers of canals in Delta was underway, and that tenders would be invited soon for private firms to implement the lining of 1,216 kilometers of canals at a cost of LE4 billion.
