No earthquake had occurred in Cairo and the tremor that was felt is an aftershock struck Turkey, said Gad El-Kady, head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research, in comments to local media.
There were no reports on any damage or casualties thus far, according to El-Kady.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or of major damage. Earthquakes that are close to the surface generally cause more destruction.
At least 226 people were killed by a powerful earthquake that struck central Mexico on Tuesday, the nation's civil protection agency said.
