CAIRO – 20 February 2023: Tremor was felt in Egypt’s Cairo and Giza as a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the southern province of Hatay inTurkey at Monday evening, two weeks after twin quakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria that left more than 40,000 deaths.

No earthquake had occurred in Cairo and the tremor that was felt is an aftershock struck Turkey, said Gad El-Kady, head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research, in comments to local media.

Egypt is completely safe and is no reason to raise panic and fear of aftershocks that occur in other countries, he added.

A state of panic and fear shrouded the people. Most of the people went to the open areas and streets, fearing the collapse of the cracked buildings from the previous earthquake in Northwest Syria, said the Syrian Civil Defense (the White Helmets).

The organization added that more than 130 people were injured in today’s quake. In Turkey, three people were killed and 213 others were injured.

Other tremors were felt also in other neighboring countries like Lebanon where people took to streets and Iraqi province of Duhok.
