CAIRO – 23 October 2023: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reiterated on Monday Egypt’s rejection of the forced displacement of the Palestinian people from their lands as he received a delegation of US Senate members from the Democratic and Republican parties.
Sisi met with the Senate members, headed by Lindsey Graham, after the delegation’s visit to Israel in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
During the meeting, Sisi highlighted Egypt’s unwavering stance on rejecting the targeting of peaceful civilians as well as the policies of collective punishment.
He also stressed the need for serious work to cease the ongoing escalation and intensify coordination between relevant actors to push for the settlement of the Palestinian cause through a fair and comprehensive solution.
This solution must ensure the rights of the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the international legitimacy references, Sisi added.
Sisi and the US delegation discussed the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip, where they agreed on the necessity to prevent the expansion of the ongoing conflict, protect civilians and prevent their targeting and provide the humanitarian and relief aid to Gaza.
They also agreed on the need to revive the peace track in the region.
The US delegation praised the Egyptian role in maintaining peace as well Egypt’s hosting of the Cairo Summit for Peace on Saturday. They hailed Egypt’s pioneering efforts to ensure the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid and services to Gaza.
Egypt and the US have been coordinating on the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza to alleviate the suffering of 2.3 million people.
Since the start of the Israeli strikes on Gaza on 7 October, Egypt has rejected Israeli schemes to relocate Gazans to Sinai, affirming that this would “liquidate the Palestinian cause.”
