CAIRO – 8 October 2023: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has called for tackling the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by backing the path of calm and advancing efforts of settling the Palestinian cause.
This should be carried out in a comprehensive, fair and sustainable way on the basis of the two-state solution and related international references, Sisi said in a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday.
Sisi and Scholz agreed on the necessity of intensified work to halt the military escalation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in order to avoid sliding into vicious circles of violence and humanitarian suffering.
The leaders also highlighted the potential serious repercussions of this escalation on the regional security and stability.
The Israeli government announced the “state of war” against Hamas fighters in Gaza starting Saturday after the Islamist group launched a surprise unprecedented attack against Israeli cities and took dozens of Israelis hostage.
Israel has launched retaliatory airstrikes against Gaza killing hundreds of Palestinians, while Hamas attacks have killed around 700 Israelis over the past two days.
Since the start of the current conflict, Egypt has been calling for both sides of the conflict to prioritize de-escalation and exercise utmost restraint.
Egypt has also made intensive contacts with international influential parties as well the Palestinian and Israeli sides to contain the situation.
Egypt has warned of the conflict’s consequences on the lives of Palestinian and Israeli civilians and its potential risks on the region’s security and stability.
