CAIRO – 21May 2017: Al-Kabbash Road project will be resumed with a budget of 230 million EGP ($12.7 million) in cooperation with Luxor governorate, the head of the projects’ sector at the Ministry of Antiquities, Waheed Abou el-Ela, told Egypt Today Friday, quoting Minister Khaled El-Enany.
Abou el-Ela said the road will be paved to allow easy access for visitors in addition to moving utilities like electricity and water. The project includes the development of the floors, the completion of the excavation and repairs to the collection of Al-Kabbash, ram-headed sphinxes, in the warehouses followed by re-installing them.
Enany announced that an engineering committee will visit Luxor next Saturday. The committee will discuss all the project’s obstacles, prepare a detailed study of the current situation and prepare a comprehensive financial feasibility study for the project. The minister announced that work on the road will start as soon as possible.
Last Tuesday, Anany visited three archaeological sites in Luxor. The minister was accompanied by Luxor Governor Mohammed Badr and archaeological leaders. This comes after President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi gave his instructions to complete the project as soon as possible.
Al-Kabbash Road is the road that connects Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple.
The project to excavate and restore Al-Kabbash Road began in 2005 and about 600 million EGP have been spent on the project. The project was halted after 2011’s January 25 Revolution.
