CAIRO-1 May 2020: Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned as champions of Ligue 1 following the announcement of the Professional Football League (LFP) which confirmed the end of the 2019/2020 football season in France.
"We have brought an end to the 2019-20 season. PSG won the Ligue 1 title, while Lorient the Ligue 2," said Nathalie Boy de la Tour, president of the LFP, as reported from ESPN.
Before the suspension of the competition, Paris Saint-Germain had a 12-point gap between them and second-placed Olympique de Marseille.
Being in second place, Marseille will be able to play in the group stage of the Champions League, while Rennes, third place, will be given a spot in the qualification rounds.
Lille and Nice, fourth and fifth respectively, will be playing in the group stage of the Europa League next season, while Reims, sixth place, will be given the opportunity to play in the qualifications of the competition.
Whereas the following teams will be relegated to the second division: Toulouse and Amiens. Additionally, Lorient and Lens will be promoted to the first division where they will be playing next season.
Following the announcement, Paris Saint-Germain [league champions] dedicated the trophy to those fighting against the coronavirus.
Part of the club’s statement read: "This 9th league championship title in the club's history is dedicated by Paris Saint-Germain to all healthcare staff and to the thousands of front-line professionals working every day to keep the country running," as reported from Sky Sports.
Paris Saint-Germain have now won seven of the last eight Ligue 1 titles, with AS Monaco winning the competition in the season of 2016/2017.
