CAIRO - 25 April 2020: Ajax’s CEO Edwin van der Sar spoke about his thoughts following the Dutch FA’s decision to declare this year’s season as null and void.
The Dutch FA announced that the 2019/20 Dutch Eredivisie season has been declared as null and void meaning that no winner will be announced for this season. Also, no teams will be promoted or relegated to the top flight.
Ajax’s veteran goalkeeper reacted to the decision of the Dutch FA saying that naturally, anyone would like to become champion.
"You want to show it on the field and we have been at the top all year round. Then it is a pity that you are not declared champion, but in this situation that may be understandable. There are more important things at the moment than football," Edwin van der Sar said, as reported from Sky Sports.
The Dutch FA announced the season as void after finding it difficult to complete the league on time due to the country’s recent measures in fighting against the coronavirus.
As a result of the Dutch FA’s announcement, several Dutch football clubs are expected to suffer financially.
Therefore, Ajax’s CEO van der Sar announced that Ajax will attempt to help those clubs that will endure difficult times financially.
“As the largest club in the Netherlands, we think it makes sense that we offer help within the industry,” van der Sar added, as reported from Sky Sports.
Ever since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China during late November 2019, around 2,800,000 people were infected and about 197,000 people died because of the disease.
As a result, several countries such as Italy, Spain, France, and England suspended their sports competitions.
