The CONMEBOL has announced the postponement of the Copa America until 2021 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The CONMEBOL [South American Football Confederation] announced that the tournament which was supposed to be held in Argentina and Columbia from June 12 to July 12 has been postponed to the summer of 2021.
"This is an extraordinary measure for an unexpected situation and responds to the fundamental need to avoid the exponential evolution of the virus," said CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez, as reported from Sky Sports.
Additionally, Dominguez confirmed that the tournament is scheduled to be held between June 11 to July 11 of the following year.
On a similar note, Euro 2020 also has been postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Such postponement of Euro 2020 and the Copa America gives an opportunity for the completion of the majority of the European leagues in the summer especially with many leagues being in the last fixtures of the competition.
Ever since the outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China on 1 December 2019 around 188,000 people were infected and about 7,500 people died because of the disease.
