It’s no surprise to say that stress is a common issue for all of us that we face quite a lot and might not know how to handle. However, everyone’s battle is different and each one of us has their share of hurdles to deal with.
From work-related problems to school, family drama, you name it. It is worth highlighting that belittling the deep psychological struggles and stress turmoil can affect the person’s psyche leading to a breakdown.
April of every year marks Stress Awareness Month, aiming to raise public awareness of stress and how to cope with it. In this article, we will be talking about ways to reduce stress in your life, encouraging everyone to break free from the stigma around mental health and talking about it
1. Avoid Unhealthy Coping Mechanism
It is easier said than done, but a key factor to reduce stress is to avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms. For instance, if you resort to smoking as a way to handle stress, it's best to cut down on the nicotine and express your frustrations in a healthier way, like working out or meditating.
Each coping mechanism to stress is different, and we are not judging the way someone deals with stress. However, if it’s harmful to your overall health, then it's time to cut it.
2. Follow a Healthy Diet
When facing any sort of trouble, some people resort to unhealthy eating habits - which is known as stress eating or emotional eating - to deal with stress and anxiety. Food is used as a means to distract ourselves from anger, frustration, and feeling overwhelmed and in a lot of cases, we eat junk food unmindfully without thinking of its negative impact on the body.
For people to overcome this struggle, there are a few ways to do it. One of which is having a healthy diet. Stock your fridge with foods that are packed with nutritional value and still tasty enough for you to eat. Pick fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, popcorn, and other nutritious foods).
3. Put Yourself First
No matter the amount of pressure you’re facing, you need to take care of yourself first. Always remind yourself that:
• It’s not your fault.
• You can handle it.
• This situation doesn’t define your personality.
• You have a lot of love and support from your family and friends.
If it feels that the worries and stress don’t stop, exit the place that causes you to become anxious, take a breather, and reflect on the things you can control and things you can change.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Who doesn’t become grumpy and cranky when they are sleep deprived? It is a known fact that sleep deprivation is a cause of stress, making your mood deteriorate and your productivity drop. As much as coffee is a good source of energy, and we sometimes tend to feel like we don’t want to talk until we’ve had our morning coffee, more consumption of caffeine is not a good idea.
In short, cut down the caffeine, stop staying up all night watching TikToks (it’s tempting, we know) and get enough sleep.
5. Get Counseling
There’s no shame in admitting that we all need help sometimes.
Don’t let the stigma of counseling keep you from improving your life and becoming the best version of yourself.
Counseling doesn’t have to be for a major mental health issue, everyone is dealing with their own demons. Some are bigger than others but that doesn't mean your pain isn’t valid or shouldn’t be addressed.
In conclusion, it’s ok not to be ok. Stress is an undeniable part of life, yet, it doesn’t have to define your entire life. Remember that it’s just a phase you’ll overcome.
