The year is drawing to a close and now, like a lot of us, you are probably getting ready with a pen and paper to set your goals and resolutions for the year. We all get excited about planning the year ahead, but quite often we lose this enthusiasm halfway through the year and end up achieving way less than we planned. If you’ve been wondering why you can’t always keep up with your new year’s resolution, here is what you need to know.

1. You did not assess or reflect on the previous year. Self-assessment is an important part of the process and to will help you know where exactly you stand. Think of the areas in your live where you have moved forward, and others where you needed to work a little harder or needed more focus. This will give you a clearer vision on the goals you need to set.

2. You’re setting unrealistic goals. Start by attainable goals. Going extra with your plans to the point where they don’t make sense will stand as an obstacle in your way and you will end up feeling demotivated.

3. There are no action plans that support achieving these goals. You keep jotting down goals and resolutions without thinking of the plan that will help you achieve it. You don’t have to have a full picture of the plan, but at least the outlines. For example, you plan to visit 4 countries this year. For you to achieve this, you first need to have a plan for your financials and the timing, and then, take it forward from there.

4. You are not clear on the way. Sometimes we set certain goals but that’s what has been incepted in our minds subconsciously. For example, let’s take buying a new car or moving to a bigger house. If you are happy and comfortable with the car you have, then what’s the point of the upgrade. Are you doing it for yourself? Or is it keep a certain societal image? The whys will determine whether it is even worth it or not.

5. You don’t track your progress. Knowing how far you’ve come is a big motivator, even if they’re still baby steps. By tracking your goals and progress you hold yourself accountable for the achievements. Progress can be as simple as a day of cutting down sugar or finishing a task. Any progress is a step further.
