CAIRO – 28 November 2017: Mexican psychological documentary "Devil's Freedom" (La Libertad del Diablo) by director Everardo González will screen at the 39th
Released on March 11, 2017, in Mexico, the documentary explores the systematic violence plaguing Mexico from two different sides; from the victims who have lost their loved ones and those who carry out acts of cruelty. González had all those interviewed in the documentary wear basic yet unnerving masks, hiding their humanity from the viewer.
Among the harrowing testimonies included is that of a man who committed his first murder at 14, a mother who had both her sons taken away by the police and vanished, a man who went into the heart of a cartel to find his missing brothers, and more. There are no good answers to be found here; no solutions or signs of hope. This is a raw, unflinching film about the aftermath of senseless violence and what it takes away.
"Devil’s Freedom" won the ‘Amnesty International Film Prize’ at the Berlin International Film Festival.
