‘Heritage of Rasheed’ exhibition reviews the history of the ancient city

CAIRO – 15 December 2021: On December 15 at 12 p.m., the National Rasheed Museum, in cooperation with the Qaitbay Citadel, is organizing an exhibition titled "Heritage of Rasheed.”

Held at the Qaitbay Citadel, the exhibition is supervised by the Museums Sector and the Islamic and Coptic Antiquities Sector of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and runs until December 18.

The exhibition comes within the framework of the museum’s educational role to spread archaeological awareness and present the history of the ancient city of Rasheed.

The exhibition includes the output of the workshops of the National Museum of Rasheed, with the participation of young artists from the cities of Rasheed and Alexandria.

It is worth noting that late President Gamal Abdel Nasser inaugurated the Rasheed Museum as a military museum on September 19, 1959, during his visit to the city.

The museum was then reopened in 1985 after being developed and provided with exhibits that tell the history of the city of Rashid.

Moreover, the National Museum of Rasheed is located on the West Bank at the link between the Nile and the Mediterranean, 65 km northeast of Alexandria.

Rasheed includes a distinguished group of houses and mosques dating back to the Ottoman era in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is home to the famous Citadel of Qaitbay, where the Rosetta Stone was found, and is considered the second largest city with a collection of Islamic antiquities after Cairo.

The museum includes collectibles and models that highlight the struggle of the people of Rasheed and the battles they fought against the French and English colonialists.

The museum also includes pictures of battles, family life, handicraft and folk industries, manuscripts and tools for daily life, In addition to a copy of the Rosetta Stone uncovered in Rasheed in 1799 and a collection of weapons from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Also, the museum displays some of the Islamic antiquities that were recently discovered in Rasheed, such as Islamic coins and pottery.
