CAIRO – 3 August 2017: Jordan exported 560,000 cubic feet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Egypt over the past four months through the Aqaba-based Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU).
The quantity is part of a deal between both countries, where Egypt will import 140,000 cubic feet of LNG from Jordan per month for a period of 10 months, Deputy General Manager of Amman’s National Electricity Company Amin el-Zaghl told Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad on Tuesday.
Jordan sent to Egypt approximately 670 million cubic meters of LNG over 2016, according to figures from the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum.
Minister of Petroleum Tarek el-Molla said in an April statement that these LNG quantities are imported from international markets, but sent to Egypt through Jordan’s Aqaba port.
Due to a shortfall in oil and natural gas production, Egypt has been importing crude and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from several countries in the past few years.
The pressure started to ease as Egypt was reportedly holding talks with its LNG suppliers to postpone contracted shipments this year as surging domestic gas production squeezes out demand for costly foreign imports.
