CAIRO - 21 January 2025: More than 65 percent of the implementation work on the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia has been completed, revealed an anonymous source at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
The project implementation period was supposed to take 7 years, but it was modified to become only 3 years.
The source explained in special statements that the timetable for the interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia to exchange 3,000 megawatts includes operating the first phase in May 2025 with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts, and operating the second phase with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts in November of the same year.
The source said that Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, assigned Engineer Sabah Mashali, Deputy Minister, to visit the project every two weeks to ensure the regularity of work and overcome all obstacles, noting that a large part of the project's tasks and all technical aspects have been completed, which allows the exchange of 3,000 megawatts between the two countries during peak times, which differ between the two countries by about 6 hours.
The source believes that the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia is one of the largest and most important projects in the entire region, stressing that Egypt plans to export energy abroad by expanding electrical interconnection projects to benefit from the enormous renewable energy capabilities that Egypt enjoys.
