CAIRO – 7 August 2024: Egypt is finalizing plans for the launch of two hydroelectric projects aimed at generating up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity through pumping and storage systems, as per a government official speaking to Asharq Bloomberg.
The investments in these initiatives are projected to reach $2.5 billion, attributing to the advanced technologies employed.
These projects, located in Luxor and Qena Governorates, are individually designed to deliver 1,000 megawatts each.
The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is poised to introduce these ventures to potential investors in the near future.
Driven by a strategic shift towards cleaner energy sources, Egypt’s move away from fossil fuels is underscored by the use of Nile River water in these projects, differing from the sewage-treated water utilized in the Jabal Ataqa initiative, which targets a capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts.
In a related development, Egypt had previously engaged with the Chinese company Sinohydro in 2019 to initiate a pumping and storage facility in the Jabal Ataqa region, entailing investments totaling around $2.7 billion.
