Cairo – January 1, 2024: Travelers using the Cairo Metro will pay slightly more to move through the capital, with Egypt’s Ministry of Transportation announcing that ticket prices for the three-line Cairo Metro have increased by LE 1-2, effective Monday, January 1st.
This is the first time the ministry has altered the prices since 2020, with the metro serving over 3.5 million commuters daily within the Greater Cairo area.
In its previous increase, the ministry upped ticket prices for those traveling through one zone (1 to 9 stops) to LE 5 from LE 3, two zones (10 – 16 stops) to LE 7 from LE 5, while travelers moving through more than 16 stops or three zones would pay LE 10.
On Sunday, the ministry announced that the new 2024 metro prices are as follows
- One zone (1 to 9 stops) – LE 6
- Two zones (10 – 16 stops) - LE 8
- Three Zones (16 – 23 stops) – LE 15
The ministry also introduced a new ticket pricing scheme for passengers traveling more than 23 stops, close to a year since its introduction of tickets for trips passing through 25 stations/stops.
As part of efforts to modernize public transport in the country, Egypt has intensified efforts to expand the metro system for years, including building additional metro lines and expanding existing lines in Cairo.
In November 2023, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly approved the trial operation of the third and final stage of the metro’s third line
Since the end of November, the Cairo Metro extended its Thursday working hours until 1 am until the end of December on a trial basis in response to marketing surveys.
