Egyptian, Cypriot presidents discuss energy files, regional issues

CAIRO – 8 January 2021: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi discussed on Thursday energy files and developments of regional issues with his Cypriot counterpart, Nicos Anastasiades.

In a phone call, Anastasiades expressed keenness to coordinate and exchange visions with Sisi on issues of mutual concern.

He hailed the firm and growing relations between Egypt and Cyprus in various fields, affirming his country’s willingness to take further steps to strengthen the ongoing bilateral relations and friendship with Egypt.

The Cypriot president also expressed keenness to develop relations with Egypt at the trilateral level with Greece.

The presidents, during the phone call, discussed issues of bilateral relations between the two countries and the regional issues, within the framework of common interests and stances in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Sisi hailed the growing bilateral cooperation with Cyprus, reflected in the keenness to coordinate stances on regional issues of mutual concern.

Sisi affirmed Egypt’s efforts to activate cooperation frameworks with Cyprus at the bilateral level as well as the trilateral level with Greece.

Sisi in October arrived in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, to attend the 8th Tripartite Summit with the chiefs of state of Cyprus and Greece.

The leaders of the three countries met to review the results and the progress of the trilateral mechanism, cooperation in the field of energy, migration issue, fighting terrorism, as well as the situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Electrical interconnection project

Earlier in October, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, discussed with Ambassador of Cyprus in Cairo, Homer Mavrommatis, the latest developments in the power interconnection project between the two countries.

Shaker stressed that the implementation of the linkage project strengthens the partnership between the two countries as well as achieving benefits for the two countries, taking into account recent developments in the electricity and energy sector and increasing the available capabilities.

He directed the rapid completion of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Cyprus, and from there to Greece and then to the rest of Europe, so that Egypt would be an important energy carrier for the European continent.
