Egypt’s information minister recovers from coronavirus

CAIRO – 5 July 2020: Egypt’s Minster of State for Information Osama Heikal on Sunday said he and his family have recovered from the novel coronavirus, about two weeks after he announced self-isolation after he came in contact with a COVID-19 patient.

“Today is my first workday after two weeks in house quarantine,” Heikal said.

Heikal had been active during the past few months before he contracted the virus, to announce the state’s measures amid the coronavirus crisis.

Late in June, Minister of Housing Assem El Gazzar also spent two weeks of self-isolation as he accidentally came in contact with a coronavirus positive case.

Gazzar told state’s Akhbar Al-Youm that he has not tested positive for the novel coronavirus but he self-isolated after he found that an attendee of one of his meetings few days earlier has contracted coronavirus.

Sons of COVID-19 positive member of Egypt's Parliament contract virus: MP

CAIRO - 14 May 2020: The sons of an Egyptian Parliament member who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) earlier this week were found to have contracted the novel virus, a senior MP said. MP Shereen Farrag has been isolated at Kasr El Aini hospital in Cairo to receive medical treatment, to be officially the first coronavirus case in the Egyptian Parliament.

Egypt recorded, Saturday, 1,342 new coronavirus cases, upping the total number of confirmed cases to 74,035.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 79 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 3,280.

As many as 413 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 20,103 so far, the spokesman said.
