CAIRO – 14 June 2020: Egypt has established a drive-through coronavirus testing clinic and started testing car drivers, as part of the state’s plan to restore normal daily activities amid the COVID-19 crisis.

In a tour by Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli, Higher Education Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Health Minister Hala Zayed, it was noted that five drive-through clinics will be prepared around the universities of Ain Shams, Cairo and Future in the capital and the 6th of October in Giza.

It was also noted that such clinics need some preparations, including a Molecular Biology unit that would be responsible for PCR tests.

The Drive Through clinics are established in cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Prime Speed for Medical Services established late in May.

A car driver is tested shortly after he reserves the service via mobile application. They can also get their cars sterilized.

Madbouli also checked a field hospital established in Ain Shams University, which is set to start work next Thursday. In this regard, he urged increasing the number of university hospitals providing treatment services for coronavirus patients in the governorates of Greater Cairo, which have the highest number of coronavirus cases.

The field hospital is established over an area of 4,600 square meters, the prime minister said, adding that it includes 200 beds, including 11 intensive care (ICU) beds and 16 beds for medical staff. It was established in 15 days at a cost of LE 28 million ($1.73 million).

This comes a day after Egypt has recorded its largest daily coronavirus deaths standing at 91, raising the death toll due to the novel virus to 1,575.

The northeastern African country recorded 1,618 new cases, Monday, raising the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in Egypt to 44,598.

As many as 402 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 11,931 so far, the spokesman said.

The number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and received negative results has reached 13,332, he added.

Restoring normal activities

The Egyptian government has earlier announced a number of decisions that aim to restore normal daily activities gradually amid the crisis.

The decisions include shortening curfew to start from 8 P.M. to 4 A.M starting June 14, continuing closing public gardens and beaches for the rest of the month, extending working hours for shops to end at 6 P.M., resuming tourism and flights to some governorates, considering opening mosques and churches starting July in some governorates, holding Thanaweya Amma (third year of secondary school) finals on time (June 21) and applying measures to secure students and staff and allowing clubs to collect membership fees between June 15 to June 30

However, the government has affirmed the need to stick to preventive measures against the spread of the novel disease. Earlier, it has imposed a tough penalty against those who do not wear face masks in streets, public transportation and other institutions.
