CAIRO - 23 May 2020: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry made a phone call with the latest development of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EU Commission, Josep Borrell on Saturday, discussing the means of containing the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the latest development of the pertaining to the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam file.
“The call also explored means to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus and underscored the importance of solidarity in order to alleviate the economic and social repercussions of the pandemic,” said Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in a statement.
He added that Shoukry and Borrell discussed developments pertaining to the Renaissance Dam file, whereby the two sides agreed on the importance of reaching an agreement and refraining from undertaking any unilateral measures.
Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia disputed over the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance dam (GERD). However, the three countries have announced a new round of negotiations to reach a final agreement after several failed attempts since 2014.

Shoukry and Borrell tackled the bilateral relations between Egypt and the European Union, added Hafez, noting that they also reviewed the international and regional issues of mutual concern such as the Palestine-Israel cause and Libyan turmoil.
“Minister Shoukry expressed appreciation for the support provided by the European Union to Egypt recently towards upgrading the health sector,” Hafez said.
