CAIRO - 7 May 2020: Local Development Minister Mahmoud Shaarawi has said that his ministry is keen on providing assistance to families that are not included in the lists of cash support programs and social security pensions in the relevant ministries.

Shaarawi's remarks came during his meeting on Thursday with Alaa Zohery, the director of governmental relations at the World Food Program's (WFP) Egypt Country Office, to discuss means of supporting small-scale borrowers and beneficiaries from the Egyptian Local Development Fund, who failed to pay their due installments because of the economic fallout of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

During the meeting, Shaarawi added that the Local Development Ministry is working to offer technical support to those categories and find solutions to avoid the recurrence of this crisis, with a view to ensuring the sustainability of projects.

On her part, Zohery said that the WFP is interested in providing all kinds of support to programs and projects implemented by the Local Development Ministry during this critical period.

She also reviewed with the local development minister some activities carried out by the WFP in the sector of education, as well as cooperation with the Egyptian Food Safety Authority to back small farmers and improve the level of nutrition especially among the poor.

The two sides tackled the progress made in supporting the most needy families in a number of governorates and providing them with financial assistance to mitigate the negative impacts caused by the government measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
