CAIRO – 1 May 2020: President of the 112-year old Cairo University on Friday mourned the death of Hisham El-Saket, the vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the university, after contracting the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
In April, Hala Salah, dean of the faculty said 17 staff members at Al- Kasr Al-Aini Teaching Hospital affiliated to the faculty tested positive for coronavirus.
In remarks to “Al-Hikaya” talk show on MBC channel, Salah added that the infected staff members include doctors, nurses, and employees, noting that the Saket was one of the registered COVID-19 cases.
CAIRO - 5 April 2020: After 17 medical staff members at the National Cancer Institute were quarantined upon testingpositive for COVID-19, all 60 patients lying at the hospital tested negative and are still receiving medical care normally. Spokesperson of Cairo University, to which the institute belongs,Mahmoud Alam el-Din stated that until present 413 samples have been taken from staff members.
On Thursday, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Cairo University located in Greater Cairo’s Giza governorate tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), the university’s spokesman said, adding that 17 contacts were traced and examined.
The administration of university announced full closure of the affected department, which houses many administration offices and some clinics, for 14 days, Spokesman Mahmoud Alam El-Deen said.
The infection control committee tasked with the case has not determined the cause of the infection, he noted.
The whole building, including the dean’s office, the secretarial offices, clinics, bathrooms, stairs and the elevator were disinfected, Alam El-Deen said, adding that sterilization process will be carried out over two weeks.
All contacts were examined and isolated for 14 days, Azza Ezz El-Arab, the vice-dean of faculty said.

Egypt recorded Thursday 269 new coronavirus cases and 12 deaths, which raises the total infected patients of COVID-19 to 5,537 and the total deaths to 392, according to health minster’s daily briefing.
Health Ministry Spokesman Khaled Megahed added that 46 patients, were discharged from the hospital after being confirmed that they are completely recovered from the virus.
This raises the number of recovered cases to 1,381 out of 1,780 who had been retested for the virus and had received negative results.
