CAIRO – 13 April 2020: Companies in the New Administrative Capital, east of the capital Cairo, have distributed face masks among laborers working in the different projects in the city, few days after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appeared in a video while scolding officials for allowing laborers to work without masks.

All precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the workers in the different sites inside the city, including screening laborers, technicians and engineers before they enter their sites and maintaining social distancing, Amr Khattab, a housing ministry official, said.

Since the coronavirus has emerged in the northeastern African country, offices and restaurants are fully sterilized, Khattab said. Also, gatherings and personal food have been banned.

The Egyptian Health Ministry announced on Sunday, that 126 new coronavirus cases were detected; all of them Egyptians, upping the total number of confirmed cases to 2065, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

Thirteen patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 159, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said that the number of patients that were discharged from hospitals after receiving necessary medical care rose to 447 on Sunday.

Also, the number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and had received negative results has reached 589.

Sisi, in a video recorded by a phone camera last week reprimanded officials at a construction site for not providing workers with masks.

“Orders must be followed. Why aren’t these people wearing masks? How much are they even paid in a day? Because if they had to stay home, they wouldn’t be able to make ends meet,” Sisi fervently says in a video of the incident.

“I will pass by here again, and if I do not see the measures applied, there will be a big problem,” the president added before leaving the site.

Last week, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli gave a speech to announce measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, including extending curfew and the flight ban in the northeastern African country until April 23rd.

Among the decisions intensifying sterilization procedures for all state facilities and deducting salaries of the prime minister and state ministers by 20 percent for three months to support precarious employment.

“Our projections for this week were 120-150 cases daily. There will be increases in the number of infections in the coming two or three weeks…but the more important thing is that the rise is slight and gradual,” Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli noted.
