CAIRO – 9 April 2020: United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo thanked Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and the Egyptian Flag Carrier EgyptAir for scheduling special flights to return American citizens back to their country.

“Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. Pompeo and Shoukry discussed regional issues and emphasized the importance of cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pompeo thanked Shoukry and EgyptAir for scheduling special flights for the American citizens stranded in Egypt,” the U.S. Department of State stated.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting the phone call between Shoukry and Pompeo. Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said Shoukry received a phone call from Pompeo, in which they reviewed the national efforts of the two states to combat the virus and limit its health and economic impact.

"They expressed mutual solidarity during the crisis," Hafez said, adding that the phone call also included discussions on various aspects of Egyptian-US relations and developments in the region.

The US Embassy has been coordinating with EgyptAir during the past period to guarantee the return of the American citizens to their country.

“This morning, thanks to @EGYPTAIR, the embassy team was able to see off hundreds of U.S. citizens for their flight back to America. We’ll continue to work closely with EgyptAir and our other partners here to bring #AmericansHome,” The US Embassy tweeted on April 1.
