CAIRO – 16 December 2019: Luxor governorate will implement the Universal Health insurance program, following Port Said, the first city to implement the new system, said a statement by the Ministry of Health.

Work is in full swing to replace and raise the efficiency of 18 family medical units out of 49 units, and renovate the rest (31 units). The units will operate within the new health insurance system to serve the public.

Registrations in the system started last October.

The ministry explained that the development work is going at a fast pace as all development work is scheduled to be finalized by February 2020, indicating that the unit serves about 29,000 citizens.

The new system gives beneficiaries the freedom to choose their health service providers and reduces personal spending on medical care.

A total of 6,000 surgeries have been carried out within the recently introduced system. Registration locations in Ismailiyah will be announced soon.

The pilot phase was launched in Port Said in July 2019, registering 506,000 citizens. The first phase of the system - set to be introduced gradually until 2030 - includes the governorates of Port Said, Ismailiyah, Suez, Luxor, Aswan, and South Sinai.
