Sudan resumes ‘groundless’ ban on Egypt’s exports

CAIRO – 20 May 2017: Sudanese authorities are still imposing an embargo on certain Egyptian exports over claims that these goods cause Hepatitis A; the accusation was dismissed by the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration (JFDA).

On March 17, Sudanese Foreign Trade Ministry imposed an import ban on certain Egyptian goods including canned fish, jam, canned tomato sauce, and ketchup over “concerns about the public health and safety.”

March’s decision is the second ban issued by the Sudanese authorities; in September 2016, the Sudanese Consumer Protection Agency officially banned importing Egyptian vegetables until receiving the results of the laboratory tests on the goods’ samples, which have been sent by Sudan to the JEDA on December 26, 2016.

The JEDA sent the Sudanese authorities the results, declaring the samples are free from the Hepatitis A.
