CAIRO – 20 December 2017: Under an Egyptian policy that aims to support Rohingya Muslims, a shipment of humanitarian aid was sent on Wednesday to Bangladesh, alleviating the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims, Egyptian Ambassador to Bangladesh Walid Shams said.
Aggregate Egyptian aid to the Rohingya community, including humanitarian assistance provided by Al-Azhar, recently amounted to about 120 tons of food aid and accommodation, Shams added.
The Egypt Agency for Development Partnerships, affiliated to the Foreign Ministry in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Defense, presented these aid packages to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in Bangladesh.
Shams pointed out that this aid is in the framework of Egypt’s solidarity with the Muslims of Rohingya, supporting Bangladesh through its ongoing efforts to counter the Rohingya Muslim crisis.
Rohingya Muslims are a religious and linguistic minority in Western Myanmar who are denied citizenship despite ethnic roots in modern-day Rakhine, one of the states in Myanmar. Consequently, they have been treated by Burmese authorities since World War II as an illegitimate group, facing apartheid-like conditions.
Over the past year, the authorities have attacked Rohingya villages, killing millions and forcing many to flee the country.
The latest military crackdown began on August 25 leading 123,000 Rohingya refugees to flee to Bangladesh. Another 400 people have died since, according to UNHCR. The death toll is accelerating as authorities prevent aid from reaching the villages.
