CAIRO – 4 January 2025: The Biden administration has informed Congress about a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, a US official stated on Friday.

This move comes as Washington continues to support its ally amidst the ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian people since 7 October 2023.

The proposed deal requires approval from both the House of Representatives and Senate committees.

It includes munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters, as well as artillery shells. Additionally, the package features small-diameter bombs and warheads, according to Axios.

The US plans come despite ongoing protests calling for an arms embargo against Israel. In August, the US approved a $20-billion sale of fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.

The Biden administration argues that this support is aimed at helping Israel defend itself against Gaza’s Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and Yemen’s Houthis.

On Friday, Egypt urged all countries that respect international law to immediately halt their exports of weapons and ammunition to Israel, in light of the ongoing violence over the past 16 months.

This call seeks to deprive Israel of the means to carry out acts of killing and destruction, said Egypt's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Osama Abdel Khalek during an emergency session of the UN Security Council on the collapse of health services in Gaza.

The war in Gaza has killed over 45,700 Palestinians to date and injured more than 108,850 others to date, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

The war has also devastated critical infrastructure and pushed the enclave toward the brink of famine.
