CAIRO – 18 August 2024: The Sudanese Sovereignty Council announced today, Sunday, that it will send a delegation from the Sudanese government to Cairo to discuss the government's vision for implementing the Jeddah Agreement.
According to a statement on the Sudanese Sovereignty Council's official Facebook page, the decision follows contact with the U.S. government, specifically U.S. envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello, and a request from the Egyptian government to meet with a government delegation in Cairo. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the implementation of the Jeddah Agreement.
In parallel, talks aimed at stopping the war in Sudan are currently underway in Geneva. These discussions, which began last Wednesday, involve Egyptian participation and are sponsored by the United States and Saudi Arabia, with the African Union and the United Nations also present.
On May 5, 2023, the US and Saudi Arabia announced their commitment to assisting the two Sudanese rivals (the Sudanese Army and the Para-military militias of the Rapid Support Forces [RSF] since it has erupted on April 15, 2023), to reach a permanent ceasefire.
