CAIRO – June 23, 2024: The Ministries of Electricity and Petroleum have announced an additional hour of nationwide power cuts on Sunday and Monday as part of the country's load-shedding program.

This brings the total daily power cutting hours to up to three hours.

In a statement released today, the Cabinet stated that this decision was made due to the ongoing extreme heatwave, which has resulted in increased local consumption of electricity and gas needed for energy production.

The extension of the load shedding duration aims to preserve the operational efficiency of electricity production plans and the national natural gas network, the statement added.

Since July 2023, the Cabinet has been implementing systematic power cuts in different governorates, citing the severe heatwave and a significant increase in electricity consumption.

The increased consumption has exerted immense pressure on the power networks, leading to a drop in gas pressure, as stated by the government last summer.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated last month that the power rationing program aims to prevent citizens from bearing the burden of excessively high electricity consumption bills.

Sisi noted that in order to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply around the clock, individuals would need to pay double or triple the current electricity price.

Mohamed El-Homsany, Cabinet Spokesman, stated in April that the power cut program would save nearly $1 billion per year for the country.

He further emphasized that these savings could be utilized to purchase necessary supplies, including food and medicines.

According to Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker, the state plans to conclude its power-shedding program by the end of the year at the latest.
