CAIRO – 29 November 2023: Egypt is joining the international community in marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, celebrated by the United Nations annually on 29 November.

The day reaffirms solidarity with the steadfast people of Palestine and helps keeping the Palestinian cause live and present in the international events and the global conscience, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ministry affirmed that the commemoration of the day this year coincides with a painful reality in which the Palestinian people are witnessing an “unprecedented brutal aggression, in which humanity has been slaughtered every day for more than fifty-four days.”

The ministry stressed that the current Israeli practices constitute a blatant violation of the rules of international law and international humanitarian law.

“The international community stands idly by in the face of the horrific toll of civilian casualties of this aggression, which claimed the lives of about 15,000 civilians, most of them women and children,” the ministry said.

Hence, the Egyptian government and people affirm their permanent and unlimited support for the Palestinian people in defending their cause as the top cause of the Arab world, the ministry said.

“The constants of the Egyptian position towards the Palestinian cause have not and will not change and [Egypt’s] commitment to its responsibility towards the Palestinian cause is a genuine commitment,” the ministry stated.

It added that Egypt will make every effort so that the brotherly Palestinian people achieve their legitimate rights to establish their independent state.

The ministry reiterated Egypt’s call for the international community to take serious and decisive action to stop the grave Israeli violations against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the entire occupied Palestinian territory.

It called for the international community to work on lifting the injustice and suffering of the Palestinian people.

“Egypt affirms that regional stability in the Middle East will only be achieved through a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause on the basis of the two-state solution and the relevant decisions of international legitimacy,” the ministry noted.

This requires the international community to collaborate seriously to implement the two-state solution and embody the independent and contiguous Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, the ministry stressed.

“On this day, Egypt reminds the international community of a steadfast people who have been suffering for more than 70 years from the scourge of occupation, murder, oppression and isolation,” the ministry said.

It added that the Palestinian people deserve all the countries and peoples of the world to “join hands with them in these critical moments.”

The ministry called for the international community to stand in support of the Palestinian people in their just and legitimate demands and their right to establish their independent state.

Int’l Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People has been commemorated every year since 1978 to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly’s Palestine partition resolution in 1947.

The day aims at reminding the international community that the Palestinian cause has not been resolved yet and that the Palestinian people have not obtained their inalienable rights as defined by the UNGA so far.

Such rights include the right to self-determination, the right to achieving independence and sovereignty, and the right of the refugees to return.

This year, the day is commemorated while the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip since October 7 has killed around 15,000 civilians, most of which are women and children, displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and damaged the enclave’s infrastructure and vital facilities.
