CAIRO - 28 August 2023: The Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched Monday in Cairo, the United Nations Regional Cooperation Framework in the field of nutrition.
The framework aims to address malnutrition in the Middle East, North Africa regions and the eastern Mediterranean.
The launch ceremony of the regional cooperation framework was attended by the Ministers of Health, Agriculture, Education, and Social Solidarity and their representatives, in addition to regional representatives and representatives of a number of international and security organizations, who will exchange views on the progress it has made in enhancing the enabling environment for nutrition, and the perceived role of United Nations agencies in supporting the country's food needs and future endeavors.
According to the "UNICEF 2023" report, there are 6.9 million adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women suffering from acute malnutrition in 12 countries, and facing the most severe food crisis since 2020, which was exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and the ongoing droughts, conflicts and instability in some countries.
According to WHO, nearly 45 percent of children deaths under the age of five are related to undernutrition, and most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, while overweight and obesity are on the rise among children in these countries.
