CAIRO – 23 July 2023: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has approved the appointment of Amr El-Hamamy as the new Egyptian ambassador to Turkey, the official gazette reported on Saturday.
In the decree number 266 of the year 2023, Sisi approved the appointment of Hamamy, who has served as Egypt’s charge d’affaires to Ankara, as new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Turkey.
Hamamy held many senior diplomatic positions and served as Egypt's consul in a number of countries, including Bulgaria and Denmark.
Earlier in July, Egypt and Turkey announced the elevation of their diplomatic relations to the ambassador level.
At the time, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs nominated Hamamy as its ambassador to Ankara, while Turkey has nominated Salih Mutlu Şen as its ambassador to Cairo.
The aim of this step is to establish normal relations between the two countries once again, and to demonstrate their shared determination to work towards enhancing their bilateral relations for the benefit of the Egyptian and Turkish people, the ministry said.
The move is expected to pave the way for increased cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including trade, tourism, and security, among others.
Egypt and Turkey have been boosting their relations over the past years after a decade of strained ties and political tensions.
