CAIRO – 6 October 2022: The Cairo Bike project will operate in 26 bike stations across the capital within a month, after it was suspended for a while, Youm7 reported.

The operation of the project was delayed because of the maintenance company's contract termination due to “exaggeration in prices,” sources at the Cairo Goernorate said, noting that another company was contracted at a lower price. The project was scheduled to start in mid-July.

"The project will be launched and operated after the completion of the 26 stations within the first phase," said Governor Khaled Abdel-Aal.

The stations will be in vital areas downtown, including Tahrir Square, Abdel Moneim Riad Square, El-Falaki Street, Mohamed Naguib Square, and El-Sherifeen Street. Expansion of the stations is scheduled to take place at Zamalek and Garden City.

Bike stations will be available in the city center, as part of the executive procedures to activate the “Cairo Bike” project to spread the use of bicycles and promote it as an alternative non-mechanical means of transportation in the capital.

Cairo Bike is the result of a partnership between the Cairo Governorate and development partners, with the support of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat). It is funded by the Swiss Drosos Foundation, while technically supported and supervised by the Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP), according to Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel-Aal in a previous statement.

"The design of the stations and bikes and their mobile application has been completed, as the idea of the bike-sharing system depends on the presence of a large network of points where bikes are available for the public," he added.

The users can use a mobile application and pay only LE 1 per hour for 8 hours maximum, with a prepaid recharge card. Students have discounted prices as they can pay 70 piasters per hour.
