CAIRO – 2 October 2022: King Charles III of the United Kingdom will not attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) due to convene in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh on November 6-18, Buckingham Palace confirmed following reports saying that he was told by UK Prime Minister Liz Truss and 10 advisers not to travel.

“Any suggestions his attendance was a point of disagreement is categorically untrue and that the decision not to attend was agreed in consultation,” Sky News understands from palace sources, adding “the idea the PM gives orders to the King is ridiculous."

On September 17, 2022, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi spoke by phone with King Charles III, said Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady in a statement.

The call touched on a number of issues of common interest, particularly climate change, in light of the multiple initiatives sponsored by the British king in this field, in addition to Egypt hosting the upcoming COP 27 summit in November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Rady said.

King Charles III was officially proclaimed as the new King of the United Kingdom after the death of Queen Elizabeth at her home in Scotland aged 96.
