CAIRO – 15 September 2022: The Egyptian Ministry of Transport announced reducing prices of tickets of the new light rail transit (LRT) operating since July by 30-40 percent until the government moves to the New Administrative Capital (NAC).
The lines of the 105-km LRT, some of which are still under construction, link Greater Cairo with Egypt’s new capital, east of Cairo.
Formerly, authorities have announced that the prices of the LRT tickets range from LE 15 to LE 35 based on the number of stops. The total number of the LRT stations is 19, including 12 that have been completed.
The reduction in ticket prices comes ahead of the new school year and the ministries’ preparations to move to the new capital, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi opened the country’s first LRT system early in July, including Adly Mansour interchange station, which is the system’s first station.
The new system links the new capital with other new cities in Greater Cairo, including Badr City and Obour City.
The LRT will be able to transfer up to one million passengers through 19 stations upon completion across a distance of around 105 km.
Egypt opened the LRT system few months ahead of the Climate Change Conference (COP27), which Egypt will host in Novemebr, as a green means of mass transportation that operates with electricity.
The Ministry of Transportation along with a consortium that comprises dozens of Egyptian and Chinese companies are constructing the system and supplying it with necessary trains and equipment.
Last year, RATP Dev signed with the transport ministry an agreement for the operation and maintenance of the 10th of Ramadan - New Administrative Capital City’s LRT for 15 years to come, which can be renewed for additional five years.
