CAIRO – 12 February 2022: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Egypt’s mega developmental projects represent a promising opportunity for further German investments in Egypt.
Baerbock’s remarks were made in a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo on Saturday, where they discussed bilateral cooperation and regional issues.
The meeting discussed issues of bilateral relations, especially on the economic, commercial, and military levels as well as trade.
Sisi said Egypt looks forward to boosting German investments in Egypt and benefiting from the German technologies and expertise for industry localization in Egypt.
Sisi asked to convey his greetings to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, stressing that Egypt attaches special importance to its close relations with Germany, and the strengthening of cooperation and mutual interests between the two countries in various fields.
He added that Egypt considers partnership relations with Germany as an essential hub for Egyptian relations with Europe, given Germany’s significance as a major European country, which was evident in the strong and unprecedented German involvement through its major companies in the ambitious development plans implemented by Egypt in the past years.
He expressed his aspiration for the continuation of this existing cooperation between the two countries with the new German government on the basis of mutual respect and balanced partnership, and based on the position of Egypt and Germany and their great significance and pivotal role.
The German Foreign Minister conveyed to the President the greetings of the German Chancellor, stressing her country's pride in the strong and distinguished relations that link Germany with Egypt, as it is the centerpiece of stability and balance in the Middle East and Africa, in addition to its primary role in combating terrorism and extremist ideology, as well as its efforts in the field of combating illegal immigration.
She hailed Egypt’s appreciated moral and humanitarian role in hosting millions of refugees, integrating them into society and providing them with all basic rights.
She affirmed the keenness of the new government in Germany to support these relations to ensure the strengthening and development of the existing partnership between the two countries at various levels.
The meeting discussed developments related to a number of regional issues of common interest.
Sisi and Baerbock agreed to continue coordination and consultation between Egypt and Germany to face the existing challenges in the region, foremost of which is the Palestinian issue, as well as the situation in Libya.
They agreed on maintaining concerted joint efforts between Egypt and Germany in an effort to implement the decisions issued by the Berlin Conference with the aim of settling the situation in Libya in a comprehensive and integrated manner that addresses all aspects of the Libyan crisis, thus contributing to the elimination of terrorism, preserving state resources and national institutions, and helping to restore security and stability in the country.
They also discussed Egypt's preparations to host the United Nations Climate Summit (COP27) in November in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The German foreign minister praised the important role played by Egypt in the framework of international and regional efforts to confront climate change. She expressed aspiration to enhance cooperation with Egypt in this regard.
Sisi stressed that Egypt is keen to achieve the optimal outcome of the Sharm el-Sheikh summit and to have the largest possible attendance, including representatives of civil organizations active in the field of environmental preservation.
