CAIRO - 3 December 2021: Covid-19 vaccines, masks, and social distancing are still the main tools against the new coronavirus varient, Omicron, the spokesperson of the World Health Organization told Nile News T.V. channel on Thursday.
"The WHO and scientists from all over the world work on determinig the impact of Omicron on transmission and severity of the disease," WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said.
"The data is limited, but more information will be available at the WHO on this issue in the upcoming days and weeks, and same goes on the effectiveness of the available vaccines," Lindmeier added.
However, the available Covid-19 vaccines provide protection, as they contribute to enhancing immunity, prevention, and reducing the symptoms of Omicron, the spokesperson continued.
More statements will be released in the comings days on the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines against Omicron, but getting vaccinated, putting on masks, social distancing, hygiene, good ventilation, and all other precautionary measures are the "firewall"against coronavirus varients, he emphasized.
The variants of the coronavirus may not respond to treatments because their genes change a lot, but vaccines are still the main tool to prevent complications resulting from these variants, and the WHO seek to update the vaccines to confront this pandemic, he said.
