Egypt’s nature reserves of Wadi El Hitan and Ras Mohamed put on IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas

CAIRO - 19 June 2021: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has put two Egyptian nature reserves of Wadi El Hitan and Ras Mohamed to the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, announced Egyptian Minister of Environment at the Parliament on Saturday.

 

She clarified that the two reserves were listed due to continuous maintenance and good management.

 

In August 2019, the official gazette “Al-Waqai’ Al-Masryia’ published decisions issued by the Ministry of Environment to regulate the management of nature reserves, most notably the application of the environmental permits system for economic activities practiced in nature reserves.

 

As part of the country’s strategy to encourage tourists to flow after a long hiatus due to the new novel of the coronavirus (COVID-19), Egypt has recently reduced the entrance fees for all natural reserves in South Sinai and the Red Sea by 50 percent. The discount will be applied on all individual trips, as well as daily cruises.

 

Below are some of the natural protectorates in South Sinai and Red Sea:

 

1- Ras Mohamed Protected Area in South Sinai Governorate.

2- Elba Natural Protected Area in the Red Sea Governorate

3- Saint Katherine Protected Area in South Sinai

4- Nabq Protected Area in South Sinai Governorate

5- Abu Gallum Protected Area in South Sinai Governorate

6- Taba Protected Area in South Sinai Governorate

7- Red Sea Northern Islands
