CAIRO – 20 May 2021: A total of 645 prisoners were released on Thursday, as per a presidential pardon and parole issued earlier on the occasion of Eid El-Fitr (Breaking fast celebration), announced the Egyptian Ministry of Interior in a statement on Thursday.

As per the criteria for releasing the inmates, the convict should serve a minimum part of their prison term as well as good behavior.

On May 7, 2021, the Ministry decided to grant an exceptional visit to all inmates in Egyptian prisons on the occasion of the Muslim’s holy feast of Eid Al-Fitr.

Two days ago, the Ministry has launched a campaign to vaccinate inmates in all prisons across Egypt who will receive Covid shots in a bid to maximize health care services inside jails.

Egypt's prisons in all governorates have reportedly recently witnessed a development process that confirms their commitment to implementing international human rights standards in prisons.

Healthcare has also been developed in prisons with more medical beds and cells prepared for those with special needs.

On many national occasions throughout the year, hundreds of prisoners are pardoned. Many prisoners are granted a presidential pardon on occasion of Sinai Liberation this year.

According to the constitution, the president has the right to issue pardons for convicted prisoners after consulting with the Cabinet.
