CAIRO – 1 May 2021: The Egyptian Health Ministry said it would send 30 tons of medical aid to India, which is fighting against one of the worst coronavirus crises ever, joining an international effort in this regard.

The aid, sent in cooperation with the Egyptian Armed Forces, contains 300 oxygen cylinders, 100 medical beds, 50 IV pumps, 50 IV syringes, 30 defibrillator, 20 ventilators, 20 electrocardiographs.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said the medical aid aims to support India during the battle against the coronavirus pandemic in light of the rise in infected cases and related deaths.

He noted that the aid was allocated based on directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

“Megahed affirmed Egypt’s keenness to help the world countries during the times of crises within the framework of its leading role,” the ministry said in a statemenet.

Megahed noted that Egypt also sent medical and preventive medical supplies to China and India during the beginning of the pandemic.

Egypt also sent aid to a number of Arab and African countries, Megahed added.

India on Saturday recorded more than 400,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time as it is hit by a devastating second coronavirus wave.

Deaths also jumped by 3,522 on the same day bringing the total death toll to 215,523.

This surge in cases has overwhelmed hospitals and caused a shortage in medicines and oxygen as well as vaccine doses although India is the world's biggest producer of COVID-19 vaccines.
