Dr. Eman Mekhemer, the manager of the Alexandria Zoo, assigned a team of doctors last Monday to provide the animals with ice, frozen fruits and ice cream to resist the summer heat. Most of the zoo animals have also had ice sheets placed in the front of their cages to cool them down.

The zoo in Alexandria is one of the oldest attractions of its type in the East. Its grounds were originally a botanical garden from the Antoniadis Gardens, part of the historic Antoniadis Palace, dating back to the Ptolemaic period in Egypt. It is the oldest park in the city of Alexandria and is one of the oldest gardens established by men worldwide. In 1916, two acres of Antoniadis Park were repurposed to display a few animals and wild birds until it was announced as a zoo in 1926.
