CAIRO – 3 April 2018: Liverpool announced on Tuesday that their Cameroonian defender, Joel Matip, will be ruled out of the rest of the season after suffering a thigh injury in the game against Crystal Palace.

The player will miss Liverpool Champions League campaign and their remaining games at the Premier League.

“Joel Matip is likely to require an operation on a thigh injury, Liverpool can confirm. The operation is likely to end the 26-year-old's involvement in the remainder of the 2017-18 season," Liverpool statement said on Tuesday.

Matip played the whole game when Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Premier League on Saturday but after the game, the player suffered a pain.

“After the game, nobody could have imagined that. Joel said he felt it a bit but he could do everything, so it should be fine,” Klopp told press on Tuesday.

The Cameroonian defender will miss Liverpool Champions League clash on Wednesday against Manchester City at home. Croatian defender, Dejan Lovren, is expected to replace the injured defender.

Klopp added “That was then quite harsh. But it is like it is. Joel has already started recovery and will be back for pre-season.”
