CAIRO – 20 September 2017: F.C. Barcelona condemned on Wednesday the Spanish government’s actions against Catalans in recent days.

“In the wake of the events that have transpired in recent days and, especially, today, with regard to the current political situation in Catalonia, FC Barcelona, in remaining faithful to its historic commitment to the defense of the nation, to democracy, to freedom of speech, and to self-determination, condemns any act that may impede the free exercise of these rights,” Barcelona said.

Spanish armed officers stormed Catalan government offices to put a stop to the Catalan independence referendum on October 1, which Spain's Constitutional Court has declared illegal.

“F.C. Barcelona publicly expresses its support for all people, entities, and institutions that work to guarantee these rights,” the statement continued.

Spanish officers arrested 12 senior officials including Catalonia’s junior economy minister, Josep Maria Jove on Wednesday morning.

Catalan protestors gathered outside the regional government offices in Barcelona, waving Catalan flags and calling for independence.

Barcelona finished their statement saying, “FC Barcelona, in holding the utmost respect for its diverse body of members, will continue to support the will of the majority of Catalan people, and will do so in a civil, peaceful, and exemplary way.”
