CAIRO, March 11, 2024: The Egyptian national football team's captain and coach, Hossam Hassan, left out Mohamed Salah, a star player for Liverpool, from the squad that will begin a camp in the Emirates on Wednesday.
The national team of Egypt is getting ready for the friendly tournament that will take place in Abu Dhabi between the 22nd and the 26th of this month, featuring the sides of Croatia, Tunisia & New Zealand.
The exclusion occurred after Liverpool requested in a formal letter to the Egyptian Football Association early last week that Salah not be allowed to play for the national squad because he was not medically ready.
Salah participated as a substitute in the last 15 minutes of his team’s 5-1 victory, on Thursday, over Sparta Prague in the first leg of the Europa League competition.
Since his injury in the second round of the group stage of the African Cup of Nations last January, Salah played only 47 minutes with Liverpool on February 17 against Brentford (4-1 in the Premier League), when he scored a goal with an assist, before he was absent again until Thursday’s match in the Europa League.
Hossam Hassan called a number of new names, such as Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mustafa Schobeir, Al-Masry striker Mohamed El-Shami, and Modern Future striker Ahmed Atef, while Mohamed Awad returned to the national team squad after a long absence.
The list was witnessed the absence of goalkeepers Ahmed El-Shenawy (Pyramids) and Mohamed Sobhi (Zamalek), who were on the team’s squad for the African Cup of Nations.
The Egyptian Football Association has ended its agreement with Hossam Hassan to coach the Egyptian national team, succeeding Portuguese Rui Vitoria, the former coach of the Egyptian national team, who left the Pharaohs after the farewell of the African Cup of Nations in the round of 16.
Hossam Hassan had recently returned to training as head coach of Modern Future club in the Egyptian league, before the Football Association needed his services.
