You finally landed that job interview you were after, now what? Leaving a good impression after an interview goes far beyond arriving on time, keeping a positive attitude, a good smile, and dressing up appropriately for the role, because all these are the basics. Also, let’s not forget that for an employer going through all those job applications, it can be hard to settle on a potential candidate, unless they see someone who stands out from the competition. So, what is it that can make you leave a lasting impression?

1. Be formal but not stiff.
Show some character. Yes, it is important to be professional but you also need to show those people on the other side of the table what kind of a person you are. Don’t arrive at the interview with rehearsed answers. Talk lightly when that point of the conversation calls for it, make eye contact, engage, and don’t stiffen up. Don’t shy away from making witty remarks or a joke – within appropriate limits of course. Let your personality speak for itself.

2. Take notes if needed.
The interview will definitely answer a lot of your questions, whether about the role, the work environment, or the company’s policies. Take notes of things you want to remember or feel you’d like to dig deeper into should you get picked for the role.

3. Don’t just be at the receiving end of the table.
Remember it is an interview, not an investigation. Just don’t be on the other side of the table answering questions. Strike a conversation, make references to previous jobs, and ask questions. Just sitting there briefly answering questions won’t leave a lasting impression.

4. Send a ‘thank you’ email.
This is often an overlooked step and barely anyone does it really. Whether you leave the interview happy or not, send an email to thank the interviewer for their time and for considering you as a candidate. Even if you have decided not to take the role after the interview, this will definitely leave a good impression about you as a person.
