The sun, the beach, and bronze skin, what can be any better? Right about now, everyone is getting that golden glow. Besides the tan, there are more reasons we like to have fun under the sun. Spending time in the sun – safely of course and within the right hours – helps boost the serotonin level, puts us in a better mood, and helps us get more vitamin D. Now back to tanning, most of us hate that time when the vacation ends and our tan fades away with it. So, here are some tips to tan safely and make it last long beyond your summertime fun.

Exfoliate
Pre-tanning prep is an important part of the process. Exfoliating will help you get an even tan, plus, when you tan when your skin is dry, chances are it will get flaky and peel afterward and your tan will fade sooner than you’d expect. However, make sure you don’t tan right before you go to the beach or the pool because your skin will be too sensitive to sun exposure. Make this step a couple of days before you plan to have a tan.

Protect
Contrary to the misconception that using sunscreen will prevent you from getting tanned, it actually protects your skin from peeling and accordingly will make your tan last longer. Spending long hours under the sun without sunscreen will not only burn your skin but can also cause skin cancer. Make sure to reapply your sunscreen every hour and between dips in the pool or the sea.

Moisturize
Your skin gets dehydrated when you spend long hours tanning, this is why after-care is very important. Use body lotions rich in shea butter and after-sun soothing lotions. Aloe vera also works like a charm in soothing sunburns and cooling your skin after a tanning session. Also, don’t forget to drink lots of water.
